Manchester United on Tuesday ended up equalling three all-time English Premier League goalscoring record in their 9-0 demolishing of Southampton at old Trafford.

There were seven different scorers as United ran riot, it will be eight if you count Southampton’s defender, Jan Bebdarek’s own goal. It is only the second time a team has had seven different scorers in an English Premier League match.

The last team to have seven different players on the scoresheet in a Premier League match was Chelsea in their 8-0 victory against Aston Villa in 2012.

The fixture at Old Trafford is also the third time ever a side won a game by nine goals. The last team to win a game by nine goals in a Premier League match was Leicester City, they put nine pass Southampton in St, Mary’s Stadium in 2019.

Also, Manchester United once defeated Ipswich by 9-0 in 1995. The reverse fixture in November ended 3-2, with United coming back from a two goal deficit to win the match.

United equalled the record number of goals scored by a team against an opponent in a Premier League season, 12 goals.

United’s game was assisted just after 82 seconds when Southampton were reduced to 10-men when Alex Jankewitz was sent off on his full debut for a horror challenge on Scott McTominay.

United went on to score four goals in the first half, with Aaron Wan- Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edison cavanni finding the net and an own goal from Jan Bednarek.

Five strikes followed in the second half as Antony Martial netted after coming on at the break. Goals from Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, and another Martial strike.

Daniel James rounded off the scoring.
Manchester United will be facing Everton over the weekend in the English Premier League.

Speaking after the game, Manchester United’s manager, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer said;

We have been waiting for them to show their magic and of course tonight was a night that they could go and enjoy. We haven’t had too many of them where you can sit down in the second half and enjoy the football. They enjoyed it and there were some good performances.

United are now level on points with Manchester City ahead of their game against Burnley on Wednesday night, although Pep Guardiola’s side do have two games in hand on the Old Trafford.
