Chelsea have named midfield outcast Marco van Ginkel in the club’s revised Premier League squad for the remainder of the season.
Chelsea struggles

van Ginkel, a 26-year-old Dutch international, has been on the books of Chelsea since 2013.

However, to this point, he has managed just 2 league appearances for the Blues.

The Vitesse youth product has spent the last 4 seasons out on loan, with AC Milan, Stoke City and PSV Eindhoven.

The latest of these temporary spells away from Stamford Bridge, a return to his home country with PSV, saw van Ginkel go on to light up the Eredivisie between February of 2017 and the summer of 2018.

Finally showcasing his true potential, the all-action midfielder racked up 7 goals and 3 assists across 15 league outings over the second-half of the 2016/17 campaign.

And last season saw the Dutchman go on to notch a further 14 goals and 4 assists, earning the captain’s armband at the Philips Stadion, before leading PSV to the Eredivisie title.
Return to Stamford Bridge

As such, PSV were expected to make van Ginkel’s move to the club permanent last summer.

Such a transfer was ruled out, though, when the 26-year-old was forced to undergo a serious knee operation in July.

As a result, van Ginkel has since spent the last half-season recovering in London.
van Ginkel back in the fold

And, as confirmed by the Evening Standard a short time ago, the possibility exists that the 8-time capped international could yet feature for Chelsea this season.

This update comes after van Ginkel was included in Maurizio Sarri’s revised Premier League squad for the remainder of the campaign.

The Utrecht native is expected to make a return to training next month.

And, with Chelsea having failed to secure a replacement for Cesc Fabregas during last month’s January transfer window, van Ginkel could yet be drafted into the plans of the Blues over the closing months of the season.
