460,235 Pirated Materials Seized as NCC Arrests 57 Copyright Offenders
The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has intensified its fight against piracy with the seizure of 460,235 pirated materials and the arrest of 57 suspected copyright violators across the country.
The enforcement operation, carried out in multiple states, forms part of the Commission’s renewed strategy to curb copyright infringement and safeguard the rights of creators in Nigeria’s creative industry. According to the NCC, the seized items include illegally reproduced books, music CDs, films, and other protected works distributed without authorisation.
Officials of the Commission revealed that the raids were intelligence-driven, targeting notorious piracy hubs, street vendors, warehouses, and distribution networks known for circulating counterfeit creative content. Several suspects were apprehended during the operation and are expected to be prosecuted in accordance with Nigeria’s copyright laws.
The NCC stressed that piracy continues to pose a serious threat to the growth of Nigeria’s creative economy, depriving artists, producers, authors, and investors of legitimate earnings while discouraging innovation. The Commission noted that sustained enforcement is necessary to deter offenders and restore confidence in the country’s intellectual property ecosystem.
Reaffirming its commitment, the NCC urged the public to support anti-piracy efforts by reporting suspected copyright violations and patronising only original, licensed content. The Commission also called on stakeholders within the creative industry to collaborate more closely with enforcement agencies to protect their works.
As Nigeria’s entertainment and publishing sectors continue to expand globally, the NCC says stricter enforcement remains critical to ensuring creators are fairly rewarded and the industry remains sustainable.
