Dangote Plans Construction of Nigeria’s Largest Seaport

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is once again making headlines with an ambitious plan to construct Nigeria’s largest seaport. The project, which will be located in the Olokola Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ) in Ogun State, is set to redefine the country’s maritime landscape and position Nigeria as a dominant force in West African trade.

This mega seaport is part of a broader industrial push by Dangote Group, aimed at enhancing logistics and infrastructure to support the company’s vast operations  including its oil refinery, fertilizer plants, and cement factories. The proposed seaport is expected to ease the burden on the already congested Lagos ports and provide a more efficient export and import hub for industrial and commercial goods.

According to sources close to the company, the planned seaport will feature a deep-water terminal capable of accommodating large vessels, with modern cargo handling equipment, storage facilities, and a focus on integrated logistics. It will also serve as a vital export point for Dangote’s growing cement and petrochemical businesses.

In a recent engagement with Ogun State officials, Aliko Dangote highlighted the strategic importance of the project. He praised the investor-friendly climate of the state and expressed confidence that the Olokola port would not only boost the region’s economy but also create thousands of jobs.

Analysts believe this seaport project will strengthen Nigeria’s position in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), providing an efficient trade gateway to neighboring countries and global markets. It also aligns with Nigeria’s long-term economic diversification strategy, reducing over-reliance on crude oil exports.

While the official timeline for completion has not been disclosed, preliminary works and regulatory engagements are reportedly underway. Stakeholders across the maritime and manufacturing sectors have lauded the initiative as a bold step toward unlocking Nigeria’s industrial and trade potential.

As the Dangote Group continues to expand its footprint across key sectors, the construction of Nigeria’s largest seaport signals a new era for infrastructure development — one that could significantly enhance the country’s global economic relevance.
