Strike: PENGASSAN Shuts Down NNPC, NMDPRA, NUPRC Headquarters
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has escalated its ongoing strike action by shutting down the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
The action, which took effect on Tuesday, has paralyzed key operations within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. According to reports, union members barricaded offices and halted official activities to press home their demands.
PENGASSAN stated that the strike became necessary after repeated calls for improved working conditions, better welfare packages, and resolution of policy-related issues were ignored by the authorities. The union warned that if the government fails to intervene swiftly, the strike could cripple petroleum operations nationwide and worsen the country’s fuel supply challenges.
The shutdown of these critical oil sector regulators has sparked concerns among Nigerians, with many fearing potential fuel scarcity and disruptions in petroleum distribution. Stakeholders are urging the federal government to engage PENGASSAN in dialogue to prevent further escalation.
This strike highlights the deepening tensions in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, raising questions about the government’s commitment to labor relations, welfare, and sustainable energy sector management.
