I Was Beaten On Set For Supporting Baba Suwe – Actor Opebe Recounts Painful Experience

Popular Yoruba actor Opebe has recounted a painful experience from his past, revealing that he was physically assaulted on a movie set for showing public support to the late Nollywood comedy icon, Baba Suwe.

In a recent interview, the comic actor disclosed that the incident happened during a film shoot many years ago when a misunderstanding arose between Baba Suwe and some colleagues in the industry. Opebe said he stood by Baba Suwe because he believed in loyalty and respect for elders  a decision that earned him hostility from others on set.

“I was beaten on set for supporting Baba Suwe. I didn’t do anything wrong; I only stood by him because I respected him and saw him as a father figure,” Opebe said.

According to Opebe, the situation escalated quickly after he spoke up in defense of Baba Suwe. Some people, who he claimed were not pleased with his loyalty, turned on him physically during the production.

The actor described the experience as both shocking and humiliating, stating that it taught him a bitter lesson about the entertainment industry and how envy and division can sometimes overshadow unity.

He added that despite the attack, he never regretted standing by Baba Suwe, who he described as a legend that contributed immensely to the growth of Yoruba comedy films.

The late Baba Suwe, whose real name was Babatunde Omidina, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated comic actors. His unique style of comedy paved the way for many entertainers, including Opebe.

Following Opebe’s revelation, several fans and colleagues have expressed sympathy and respect for his courage. Many described his loyalty as rare in today’s entertainment scene, where fame and rivalry often take precedence over friendship and respect.

Social media platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) have since been buzzing with reactions, with users praising Opebe for speaking his truth and keeping Baba Suwe’s memory alive.

The veteran actor used the opportunity to advise upcoming entertainers to stay humble and loyal, regardless of industry politics. He emphasized that fame is temporary, but character and integrity will always speak louder.

“In this industry, people will try to turn you against others. Stay true to yourself and don’t let fame change who you are,” he advised.

Opebe’s revelation sheds light on the unseen struggles behind the laughter in the Nigerian movie industry. His experience is a reminder of the challenges actors face, even within their own community. Despite the pain, his story remains one of loyalty, courage, and unwavering respect for a legend like Baba Suwe.
