Nigeria Set to Lead Africa’s $500bn Fashion Boom – Hannatu Musawa Declares

Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has revealed the country’s ambitious plans to dominate Africa’s rapidly expanding $500 billion fashion industry. The minister made this announcement while highlighting the government’s strategic agenda to position Nigeria as the fashion capital of Africa through investment, talent development, and global visibility.

Musawa emphasized that Nigeria’s creative industry—especially fashion—has evolved into a global force, powered by a blend of traditional heritage and modern innovation. She noted that the sector’s value is projected to hit $500 billion across Africa, with Nigeria set to take the lead due to its vibrant designers, dynamic youth population, and strong cultural influence.

According to the minister, the Ministry of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy is working on several initiatives, including fashion hubs, export incentives, and global collaborations to help local designers compete internationally. She also urged investors to tap into the potential of Nigeria’s creative economy, describing fashion as one of the country’s strongest cultural exports after music and film.

“Nigeria’s fashion identity is not just about style—it’s about economic empowerment, youth creativity, and global recognition,” Musawa said. She also hinted at partnerships with private stakeholders to boost capacity building and create millions of jobs within the sector.

Industry experts have hailed the move, saying it could cement Nigeria’s position as the trendsetter in African fashion, following the global success of Nigerian designers at major events such as Lagos Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week.

With the government’s renewed commitment, Nigeria’s fashion ecosystem could soon rival global fashion centers like Milan, Paris, and New York—placing Africa firmly on the world fashion map.
