NDIC Boss: Nigeria’s Laws Now Stronger and More Effective in Prosecuting Bank Failure Cases
The Managing Director of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Bello Hassan, has assured that Nigeria now possesses a stronger and more effective legal framework to hold accountable those responsible for bank failures and financial misconduct in the country.
Speaking during an engagement with stakeholders in Abuja, Hassan emphasized that recent amendments to the NDIC Act have given the corporation expanded powers to investigate, prosecute, and recover assets from failed banks and culpable officials. He stated that the move reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring financial system stability and depositor protection.
According to him, the revised legal provisions empower the NDIC to act decisively against individuals, directors, and institutions whose negligence, fraud, or mismanagement contribute to bank collapses. Hassan noted that this framework not only promotes transparency in the banking sector but also serves as a deterrent to future violations.
He further explained that the corporation is collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and other regulatory bodies to ensure that offenders face justice while depositors’ interests are safeguarded. The NDIC boss reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to protecting depositors, maintaining confidence in the financial system, and promoting a sound banking culture in Nigeria.
