PDP Drifting Beyond Repair — Hakeem Baba-Ahmed Warns as Party Crisis Deepens
Prominent political commentator and former Northern Elders Forum spokesperson, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has warned that Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), may be drifting beyond repair amid persistent internal crises.
Baba-Ahmed made the remark while reflecting on the prolonged leadership disputes, unresolved factional battles, and lack of ideological clarity within the party. According to him, the PDP’s inability to address its internal contradictions has weakened its relevance as a credible alternative to the ruling party.
He noted that rather than focusing on rebuilding trust with Nigerians, the PDP has remained consumed by power struggles, ego clashes, and competing interests among its leaders. This, he argued, has left the party disconnected from the concerns of ordinary citizens who are grappling with economic hardship, insecurity, and governance challenges.
“The PDP has failed to learn from its past mistakes,” Baba-Ahmed observed, adding that without sincere reconciliation and structural reform, the party risks further fragmentation. He stressed that Nigerians are watching closely and will not support a political platform that appears disorganised and directionless.
Political analysts say Baba-Ahmed’s comments echo growing public sentiment about the opposition’s struggles to present a united front. The party has faced repeated defections, court battles, and leadership wrangles since losing power in 2015, raising questions about its preparedness for future elections.
