FG Denies Siting Gold Refinery in Lagos
The Federal Government (FG) has denied reports suggesting that a gold refinery is being sited in Lagos, describing the claims as misleading and inaccurate.
Reacting to the speculation, government officials clarified that while Nigeria is actively pursuing initiatives to boost value addition in the solid minerals sector, no decision has been taken to locate a gold refinery in Lagos. The clarification follows growing public debate after reports circulated online and across media platforms suggesting that Lagos had been selected as the refinery’s location.
According to the FG, discussions around establishing a gold refinery are still focused on broader policy objectives, including supporting artisanal miners, strengthening local refining capacity, and improving revenue generation from Nigeria’s gold resources. Officials stressed that any final decision on location would be guided by technical, economic, and regulatory considerations rather than speculation.
The government also urged Nigerians to rely on official statements for accurate information, warning that unverified reports could create unnecessary confusion and misinform investors and the public.
Nigeria has, in recent years, intensified efforts to formalise the gold mining value chain, curb illegal exports, and increase transparency in the solid minerals industry. Authorities say further updates on refinery plans will be communicated through appropriate channels when available.
