Schools, Offices Shut as FCTA Workers Begin Strike

Activities across Abuja were partially shut down on Monday as workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) commenced an industrial action, leading to the closure of public schools and government offices.

The strike, reportedly declared by organised labour unions within the FCTA, is in protest against unresolved issues bordering on welfare, unpaid entitlements, and outstanding agreements with authorities. As a result, many civil servants stayed away from work, while public schools under the FCTA remained locked.

Residents across the Federal Capital Territory reported disruptions to essential services, with several government secretariats, area council offices, and education facilities affected. Parents and students were seen returning home after discovering schools would not open for academic activities.

Union leaders insist the strike will continue until their demands are addressed, accusing authorities of failing to honour previous commitments. They also warned that further shutdowns could occur if negotiations do not resume promptly.

The FCTA authorities are yet to issue a detailed response, but sources indicate that talks may be initiated to prevent prolonged disruption, especially as the strike continues to impact education and public administration.

The development adds to growing labour tensions across the country, as workers increasingly demand improved conditions amid rising economic pressures.
