NDLEA Secures 14,225 Convictions, Seizes 14.8 Million Kilograms of Drugs in Five Years — Marwa
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded major successes in Nigeria’s fight against illicit drugs, securing 14,225 convictions and seizing over 14.8 million kilograms of drugs within the last five years.
The disclosure was made by the NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), who highlighted the agency’s achievements since the current leadership took over.
According to Marwa, the seizures cut across various illicit substances including cocaine, heroin, cannabis sativa, methamphetamine, tramadol and other controlled narcotics, intercepted through coordinated operations nationwide.
He attributed the progress to intelligence-driven operations, improved inter-agency collaboration, and sustained support from the Federal Government, noting that the NDLEA has significantly strengthened its enforcement, prosecution and rehabilitation frameworks.
Marwa added that beyond arrests and seizures, the agency has expanded its drug demand reduction efforts, focusing on public sensitisation, treatment and rehabilitation of drug-dependent persons.
“The fight against drug abuse and trafficking is not just about arrests. It is about saving lives, protecting communities and safeguarding Nigeria’s future,” he stated.
Security analysts say the figures underscore a renewed momentum in Nigeria’s anti-drug campaign, particularly at seaports, airports, land borders and major drug distribution hubs.
The NDLEA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustaining the crackdown on drug traffickers while strengthening partnerships with local and international stakeholders to curb the growing menace of drug abuse in the country.
