Fela Kuti Makes History as First African to Receive Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
Legendary Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti has made history by becoming the first African artist ever to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
Nearly three decades after his death, Fela’s enduring contribution to world music and culture was recognised alongside icons such as Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Paul Simon, Cher and Carlos Santana — all honourees at the event.
The honour was accepted on behalf of Fela by his children Yeni, Kunle, Shalewa and Femi Kuti, who expressed gratitude and pride on behalf of the family. Yeni Kuti shared that she believes her father would be proud of the recognition and that it symbolises a broader acknowledgment of African music on the world stage.
Fela’s impact as the father of Afrobeat — blending jazz, funk, traditional Yoruba rhythms and politically charged lyrics — has resonated internationally and helped shape the sound of contemporary African music, including the rise of Afrobeats. His work has inspired musicians across continents and generations, from modern Nigerian stars to global artists.
Despite never being nominated for a Grammy during his lifetime, this Lifetime Achievement Award affirms Fela’s lasting influence and cultural significance. In 2025, his landmark 1976 album Zombie was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, reflecting the deep and lasting legacy of his music.
