FG Unveils $552m Initiative to Boost Basic Education Reform

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a $552 million education reform initiative aimed at strengthening basic education across the country — a move designed to improve teaching quality, learning environments, and student outcomes.

This ambitious plan reflects a renewed focus on addressing longstanding challenges in Nigeria’s educational system, from outdated teaching methods to inadequate infrastructure and teacher support.

According to government officials, the $552 million programme is expected to:

  • Enhance teacher training and professional development

  • Rehabilitate and build learning infrastructure

  • Expand access to quality education materials

  • Introduce data-driven monitoring and curriculum support systems

Officials say the initiative will help align Nigeria’s basic education sector with global best practices while making learning more equitable and inclusive for all children.

Basic education — which includes primary and early secondary schooling — is widely viewed as the foundation of sustainable development. Yet, decades of underinvestment have contributed to gaps in literacy, numeracy, and school attendance.

Education experts have welcomed the reform plan, noting that strategic investments in teachers and infrastructure could yield long-term gains in human capital development.

A large portion of the funds is reportedly earmarked for teacher capacity building, which includes workshops, certification programmes, and classroom support tools. The government believes that strengthening educators will have a direct impact on learning outcomes.

Infrastructure improvements such as classroom renovation, improved sanitation, and digital resource integration are also prioritized.

The announcement has been met with positive reactions from educators, civil society groups, and parents’ organisations. Many have emphasised the need for transparency, strong oversight, and effective implementation to ensure the funds translate into real progress on the ground.

The Federal Government has indicated that implementation will begin in phases, with additional details to be shared as state and local education authorities are engaged in rollout plans.
