NUT Stages Nationwide Protest Over Abduction and Killing of Teachers in Oyo
The Nigeria Union of Teachers has staged a nationwide protest to draw attention to the abduction of teachers and students in Oyo State, as well as the reported killing of some educators during the crisis.
The union directed teachers across Nigeria to participate in solidarity rallies while public school teachers in Oyo State were instructed to withdraw their services indefinitely until the abducted victims regain their freedom.
According to the NUT, teachers and pupils were abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026. The union expressed concern over the continued captivity of the victims and the impact of insecurity on education across the country.
NUT President, Audu Titus Amba, described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that schools must remain safe environments for teaching and learning. The union also voiced concern about reports that some victims remain in captivity while others were reportedly killed during the attacks.
The nationwide demonstrations took place in several states, with teachers marching to government offices and calling for stronger security measures around schools. Protesters demanded urgent action from authorities to secure the release of the abducted teachers and learners and to prevent future attacks on educational institutions.
The union further urged federal and state governments, security agencies, and community leaders to work together to improve school safety and restore confidence in the education system.
The protests have reignited national conversations about insecurity, the protection of schools, and the welfare of teachers and students across Nigeria. Many stakeholders have called for immediate intervention to ensure that educational institutions remain safe places for learning.
