AI Disruption: 9 Million Nigerian Jobs May Disappear by 2030 – Experts

Nigeria could face a major transformation in its labour market as artificial intelligence (AI) and automation increasingly take over routine tasks, with experts warning that about nine million jobs could be displaced by 2030.

The warning comes at a time when millions of young Nigerians are entering the workforce and searching for employment opportunities. Experts say the disruption may not initially appear as mass layoffs but could instead happen through companies reducing the number of new workers they hire.

Technology entrepreneur Chimezie Chuta described the emerging trend as particularly concerning for young people entering the labour market.

“The first person displaced by AI may not be the person whose job disappears. It may be the person who is going to be hired next.”

Similarly, Gbolabo Awelewa, Chief Business Officer of esentry, described the phenomenon as “quiet displacement”, explaining that businesses may automate certain tasks before eventually making decisions about workforce numbers.

Banking, Finance and Media Among Vulnerable Sectors

Several sectors of the Nigerian economy are already experiencing increased AI adoption.

These include banking, fintech, insurance, accounting, customer service, recruitment, media and software development, where businesses are increasingly using AI to handle tasks traditionally performed by human employees.

Financial institutions, for example, are increasingly relying on digital assistants and automated systems to handle routine customer transactions.

The shift is not limited to customer-facing roles. AI is also being deployed for back-office operations, data processing and other administrative functions.

9 Million Jobs at Risk, But 11 Million Could Be Created

Despite the concerns surrounding job losses, experts say the AI revolution could also create significant opportunities for Nigeria.

A Nigeria-focused economic review cited in the report projects that automation could put around nine million routine jobs at risk by 2030, particularly in areas such as banking, clerical services and public administration.

However, the same projections indicate that about 11 million technology-enabled jobs could potentially be created if Nigeria invests adequately in digital skills, education and reskilling.

This means AI could ultimately reshape Nigeria’s workforce rather than simply eliminate employment.

Experts say the biggest challenge will be ensuring that workers whose roles are disrupted can transition into new opportunities.

Rather than competing directly with AI on repetitive tasks, Nigerian workers may need to develop skills that complement emerging technologies.

These include AI literacy, data analysis, cybersecurity, critical thinking, creativity, communication, problem-solving and other human-centred skills. Nigerian workforce analysts have similarly highlighted the growing importance of combining technical abilities with strong human skills.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 also projects major labour-market disruption from technology, while emphasising that technological change can simultaneously destroy some roles and create new ones.

The emerging AI revolution presents Nigeria with both a challenge and an opportunity.

Without adequate investment in education and reskilling, millions of workers could find themselves unprepared for an increasingly automated economy.

But with the right policies, digital infrastructure and training programmes, AI could help create new industries and employment opportunities while improving productivity.

For Nigeria’s rapidly growing young population, the coming years could therefore determine whether artificial intelligence becomes primarily a job destroyer or a powerful source of new opportunities.
