According to Jide Kosoko, I’m still not wealthy by Nigerian standards.
Jide Kosoko, a veteran actor, talks about his more than 60-year career in Nollywood and admits that, in spite of his notoriety, he hasn’t accumulated much fortune by Nigerian standards.
He was interviewed by the podcast The Honest Bunch.
Since starting his acting career as a child actor in 1964, Kosoko, now 71, has acted in hundreds of Nollywood productions.
However, he calls for tougher punishments for pirates because he thinks that piracy has had a terrible effect on the film business.
“In my opinion, the copyright law’s penalties for infringement are still insufficiently harsh. A billionaire is someone who has been stealing people’s works for years, therefore.
If you give him N500 million, he will just take it from his sales. However, if you impose a 20-year jail sentence without the possibility of a fine, people will not engage in piracy,” he stated.
The difficulties experienced by performers and filmmakers in Nigeria, where piracy is still a major barrier to success, are highlighted by Kosoko’s remarks.
Kosoko is still modest and appreciative of the chance to pursue his passions in spite of his success.
“I have this much experience in the [movie] industry. Being able to eat three square meals makes me grateful to God. But by Nigerian standards, can I say that I am wealthy? “No,” he responded.
