COVID-19 KILLS BUT HUNGER KILLS FASTER
I woke up this morning at 4am and I couldn’t close my eyes again.
First, I must commend the Government of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu for taking the bull by the horn and for the success recorded so far in this fight against the pandemic virus.
With the lockdown exactly a WEEK, one would ask if the only thing we’re fighting is the virus without considering the corresponding effect of the lockdown(by asking people to sit at home). I am so heartbroken with the way the Governments have handled the WELFARE of her Citizens in this trying time. From the billions of naira we heard on the news they claim they’ve spent on “food supplies” to vulnerable Nigerians(by whose statistics and projection?). One would expect the Government to be more proactive, efficient and accountable.
Afterall, Nigerians are used to providing everything for themselves i.e. water, electricity, buying of transformers, electric poles, security and so on.
It is more painful to know Government find it easier to bring NEPA bill, WATER bill, LAND USE charge, PVCs to our door step but the welfare of her Citizens(especially tax payers) is treated with a kid hand.
One would have expected the Government to RISE up to this occasion, provide relief materials to ALL it’s citizens; this way, confidence will be built on the Government(both state and Federal). It is more depressing to know other Countries on lockdown made provisions of foodstuffs and cash to their Citizens(USA,UK, France, China etc), why can’t we do that here?
My heart is heavy, I am heartbroken because of the number of people in my inbox asking for help on food supplies and assistance. I have done the little I could do but its not in any way enough. I wish I could help beyond this, I wish I could give to everyone who ask and needs; I feel so bad when people come to me for assistance and my hands are tied. I am an Advocate of “Giving is loving”, but you can’t give more than your capacity.
I don’t have it all figured out too, but thank God for His grace and the wonderful people around me.
I plead to ALL well-meaning Nigerians to please, let’s come together and be our brother’s keeper. We need each other
