ACJHR Hails Tinubu, FIRS Boss Over Ongoing Tax Reform
The Africa Centre for Justice and Human Rights (ACJHR) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for what it described as bold and progressive steps in Nigeria’s ongoing tax reform efforts.
In a statement, the organisation praised the administration’s commitment to restructuring the country’s tax system to improve transparency, efficiency, and revenue generation. ACJHR noted that the reforms reflect a deliberate effort to strengthen public finance management while reducing loopholes that have historically undermined tax compliance.
The group also lauded the FIRS under its current leadership for introducing measures aimed at modernising tax administration, expanding the tax net, and promoting voluntary compliance among individuals and businesses. According to ACJHR, these initiatives are crucial to funding critical infrastructure and social services without placing undue pressure on already burdened citizens.
ACJHR further emphasized that effective tax reform plays a key role in promoting accountability and good governance, as it strengthens the social contract between the government and the people. The organisation urged authorities to ensure that revenue generated from the reforms is transparently deployed for national development.
While acknowledging the challenges associated with reform implementation, ACJHR called for sustained stakeholder engagement and public sensitisation to ensure long-term success. It also encouraged continuous oversight to guarantee that the reforms align with principles of fairness and justice.
The commendation adds to growing public discourse around Nigeria’s tax policies and the broader economic reform agenda under President Tinubu’s administration.
