ADC Alleges Anambra Election Was Heavily Monetized
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed deep concern over what it described as the heavily monetized nature of the recent Anambra election. According to the party, the exercise was marred by widespread vote-buying, financial inducements, and electoral malpractice, which undermined the credibility of the democratic process.
Speaking on the aftermath of the election, the ADC leadership alleged that some political actors prioritized money over the will of the people, creating an uneven playing field for smaller parties and independent candidates. The party noted that this culture of monetization not only weakens democracy but also discourages credible individuals from participating in the political process.
The ADC further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant authorities to investigate reports of vote trading and electoral misconduct to restore public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system. The party emphasized the urgent need for electoral reforms that would make elections more transparent, credible, and less dependent on financial power.
The statement also urged voters in Anambra and beyond to resist monetary influence during elections, stressing that the future of the state and the country depends on choosing competent leaders rather than accepting temporary financial gains.
Political observers and civil society groups have echoed ADC’s sentiments, noting that the trend of monetization during elections poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy if not urgently addressed.
