Adebayo Salami – A Good Director Won’t Cast Actors Based on Sentiment

Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, has weighed in on the casting practices in the Nigerian movie industry, emphasizing that professionalism should always outweigh sentiment in directorial decisions.

In a recent interview, the respected thespian stressed that one of the key responsibilities of a good director is to maintain objectivity during the casting process. According to Salami, giving roles based on personal relationships, favoritism, or sentiment rather than merit and talent not only weakens the quality of a production but also stunts the growth of the industry.

“A good director will never allow sentiment to influence casting choices,” he stated. “When you’re passionate about your craft and want the best for your project, you’ll choose actors who fit the role, not those who are your friends or family.”

Salami, who has played a pivotal role in the evolution of Yoruba cinema and Nollywood at large, also highlighted how emotional bias in casting has led to underwhelming performances and poor audience reception. He urged directors to prioritize the script, character demands, and delivery over loyalty or personal ties.

The legendary actor, known for grooming many top talents over the decades, called for a renewed focus on professionalism, mentoring, and integrity among industry stakeholders. “We must protect the essence of storytelling and the credibility of our productions. That’s how we earn global respect.”

Adebayo Salami’s remarks resonate deeply within Nollywood, where concerns about favoritism and cliques have often sparked debates. His words serve as a timely reminder that excellence in filmmaking starts with the right choices behind the scenes — especially in casting.

With his decades of experience, Salami remains a respected voice in Nigerian cinema, continuously advocating for quality, discipline, and fairness in the craft of filmmaking.
