Boniface present as Chidera Ejuke’s Sevilla fall to Barcelona again
Sevilla welcomed Barcelona for the second installment of their La Liga clash against Sevilla on Sunday. Recall that the first episode of the tie resulted in a 5-0 loss for Sevilla. That was also the game in which Ejuke got his hamstring injury.
Ejuke started from the bench and Akor Adams missed the match because of an injury, but Los Nervionenses currently have two Nigerians on their roster.
The Bayer Leverkusen star Boniface posted a video of Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan shortly before the game began. After the game, Boniface shared a picture of himself with Ejuke and their agents.
Robert Lewandowski gave Barcelona the lead after just seven minutes as Barcelona dominated the first half of the match. But Sevilla drew one back seconds later thanks to Ruben Vargas.
Up to the intermission, the game stayed that way. But in the second half, Barca changed things up a level. They were rewarded, as Barcelona took a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Fermin Lopez and Raphinha in the first ten minutes.
Unfortunately, Lopez’s dismissal for a poor tackle in the 61st minute diminished their momentum. Just a minute later, Ejuke was introduced into the game.
The Nigerian replaced Vargas, but he could not pepper the Barcelona backline. Known for his immaculate ability to dribble, he was on the receiving end this time, with Lamine Yamal and Jules Kounde dribbling past him on multiple occasions.
Although Ejuke missed three months of play, he hasn’t been the same since his injury. Normally, Ejuke enjoys hugging the ball and creating space for his team, but he was unable to do so against Barcelona.
When Sevilla attacked, Vargas, who had started the game, was more potent and appeared more menacing. Ejuke should work on that because his performance was insufficient to persuade coach Garcia Pimienta that he merits more time.
If Ejuke does not pick up the pace soon, he could be relegated to being a bench warmer.
