BREAKING: Uber, Bolt, Other Ride-Hailing Drivers Begin Three-Day Strike in Lagos, Ogun

Drivers operating on ride-hailing platforms such as Uber, Bolt, and inDrive have begun a three-day strike across Lagos State and Ogun State.

The action was announced by the Amalgamated Union of App‑Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), which represents thousands of app-based drivers in the region.

Union leaders say the strike is a response to low fares, high commission charges, and rising operational costs such as fuel, vehicle maintenance, and inflation.

According to the union, current fare structures on the platforms no longer reflect the economic realities drivers face, making it increasingly difficult for many to earn a sustainable income.

  • The shutdown will last three days.

  • Drivers will log off from ride-hailing apps during the strike period.

  • Services may be significantly reduced or unavailable in parts of Lagos and Ogun.

The union said the action is meant to push companies and regulators to address drivers’ concerns and improve working conditions.

Drivers have reportedly presented several demands to ride-hailing companies and authorities, including:

  • Review of fares to match fuel and maintenance costs

  • Reduction in commission taken by ride-hailing platforms

  • Introduction of a minimum base fare

  • Improved rider verification for safety

  • Insurance coverage and emergency support for drivers

Commuters in Lagos and Ogun may experience longer waiting times and surge pricing during the strike due to reduced driver availability.

The union has apologized to passengers for the inconvenience but says the protest is necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of app-based transport services.
