Davido Recounts Skipping School in 2011 to Perform at Ibadan Show
Global Afrobeats sensation Davido has shared a nostalgic story about his early days in the music industry, revealing how he skipped school in 2011 to perform at a show in Ibadan, Oyo State. The multi-award-winning artist opened up about the moment during a recent chat about his rise to fame, explaining how his passion for music pushed him to take bold risks even as a student.
Davido, who was studying at Oakwood University in the United States at the time, said his love for performing was stronger than his desire to stay in school. “I remember leaving school just to come to Nigeria for a show in Ibadan back in 2011,” he recalled. “It was one of those moments that made me realize music was my calling.”
That decision marked a turning point in Davido’s career. Shortly after, he released “Dami Duro”, the hit song that catapulted him into the limelight and solidified his place in Nigeria’s Afrobeats scene. Over a decade later, Davido has evolved into one of the biggest African music exports, selling out arenas worldwide and collaborating with international superstars.
Fans have praised Davido’s story as a symbol of determination and faith, reflecting the artist’s long-standing motto — “We rise by lifting others.” His recollection also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices behind his success, showing how a single act of courage in 2011 helped define an era in African music.
