Drug Abuse in Nigeria Has Reached an Epidemic Level – Pyrates Confraternity Warns Authorities

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), also known as the Pyrates Confraternity, has raised serious concern over the alarming rise of drug abuse in Nigeria, describing the situation as having reached an epidemic level.

According to the group, substance abuse has grown into a dangerous social menace affecting young people across the nation, cutting across both urban and rural communities. The Pyrates warned that without immediate government intervention, the nation could face a deepening crisis that threatens its social and economic stability.

In a recent statement, the group emphasized the need for stronger enforcement of drug laws, widespread public awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation programs to address the root causes of addiction. They also highlighted the increasing availability of hard drugs, such as tramadol, codeine, and crystal meth (commonly known as “mkpurummiri”), as a major driver of the ongoing crisis.

The Pyrates further called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Federal Ministry of Health to intensify their efforts in combating illicit drug distribution networks while providing better support systems for addicts seeking recovery.

Experts have also linked the rising drug abuse cases to unemployment, depression, and peer pressure, stressing that collective action from families, religious organizations, and civil society groups is key to reversing the trend.

As Nigeria continues to battle this growing challenge, the Pyrates Confraternity insists that tackling drug abuse must become a national priority to safeguard the country’s future generation.
