#EndBadGovernance: Simi Stands With Protesters Amid Nationwide Demonstrations
Nigerian singer and songwriter Simisola “Simi” Ogunleye has voiced her support for the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, joining a chorus of celebrities and public figures calling for systemic change in the country. As demonstrations spread across Nigeria, Simi expressed solidarity with protesters who are rallying against economic hardship and government corruption.
In a statement released on her social media platforms, Simi emphasized the importance of the protests and her commitment to the cause. “I stand with the people of Nigeria who are demanding better governance and accountability from our leaders. This movement is about our future, our rights, and our dignity,” she said.
The protests, which began on August 1, 2024, have seen thousands of Nigerians taking to the streets in cities including Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt. Protesters are calling for an end to corruption, economic mismanagement, and human rights abuses that have plagued the nation for decades.
The demonstrations have not been without incident. In Abuja, security forces used tear gas to disperse crowds at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, resulting in several injuries. Similar scenes played out in Lagos at the Lekki Toll Gate, where protesters were met with heavy police presence and tear gas.
Human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa criticized the government’s response to the protests, urging security forces to exercise restraint and respect the rights of peaceful demonstrators. “The government’s heavy-handed tactics only serve to escalate tensions. We call for immediate accountability for any law enforcement officers involved in violating the rights of protesters,” he stated.
In response to the escalating unrest, several state governments have imposed curfews. Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf declared a 24-hour curfew after looters targeted and set fire to the newly built Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) Industrial Park. Similar measures were implemented in Borno, Yobe, and Nasarawa states following violent clashes and property destruction
Simi’s support adds to a growing list of Nigerian celebrities advocating for change. Fellow artists like Falz and Burna Boy have also been vocal in their support, using their platforms to amplify the protesters’ demands and encourage peaceful demonstrations. “Our voices are powerful, and we must use them to demand the Nigeria we deserve,” Simi added in her statement.
The protests have also drawn international attention, with human rights organizations and global media outlets highlighting the plight of Nigerians and the call for good governance. The international community has urged the Nigerian government to address the root causes of the unrest and engage in meaningful dialogue with the protesters.
The protests have significantly impacted economic activities across the country. Major markets, banks, and businesses were closed in protest-affected areas, leading to economic slowdowns. The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has expressed concern over the long-term economic implications if the situation remains unresolved.
Despite the challenges, the protesters remain determined to see their demands met. Civil society organizations, including the United Action Front of Civil Society, have called for sustained pressure on the government until meaningful reforms are implemented. Olawale Okunniyi, a prominent CSO leader, stressed the importance of maintaining non-violent protests to achieve their goals.
As the #EndBadGovernance movement gains momentum, it is clear that the voices of Nigerian citizens are resonating both domestically and internationally. Simi’s public support underscores the critical role of influential figures in driving social change and advocating for a better Nigeria.
