FAAN Bans Cash Transactions Nationwide as Cashless Policy Takes Effect February 29

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced a nationwide ban on cash transactions across all Nigerian airports, with the new cashless policy set to take effect on February 29.

The move marks a significant shift in airport operations, aligning with Nigeria’s broader push toward digital payment systems and financial transparency.

Under the new directive, all payments within FAAN-operated facilities — including ticketing counters, service charges, parking fees, and other airport-related transactions — will be conducted strictly through electronic payment channels.

Passengers, airport vendors, and service providers will be required to use debit cards, bank transfers, Point of Sale (POS) machines, QR codes, and other approved digital platforms.

FAAN stated that the policy is aimed at improving accountability, reducing leakages, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring safer financial transactions within airport premises.

The authority noted that transitioning to a cashless system will help:

  • Strengthen revenue monitoring

  • Reduce risks associated with cash handling

  • Improve transaction transparency

  • Align airport operations with global aviation standards

Industry observers say the move reflects a growing trend in digital transformation across Nigeria’s public sector.

Travelers are advised to come prepared with electronic payment options to avoid disruptions. Vendors operating within airport terminals are also expected to comply with the directive before the February 29 implementation date.

While some stakeholders have welcomed the development as progressive, others have raised concerns about potential network failures or payment processing delays, especially during peak travel periods.

FAAN’s cashless transition signals a broader modernization effort within Nigeria’s aviation industry. If effectively implemented, the policy could enhance passenger experience and reduce operational bottlenecks linked to manual cash handling.

As the February 29 deadline approaches, stakeholders are expected to intensify awareness campaigns to ensure a smooth nationwide rollout.
