Federal Government Announces Increase in Nigerian Passport Fees Effective September 1
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially announced an upward review of the fees for obtaining Nigerian passports. The new fee structure, which is set to take effect from September 1, 2024, was disclosed by the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a press briefing held at the Ministry of Interior headquarters in Abuja.
In his statement, Hon. Tunji-Ojo explained that the decision to increase the fees was driven by the need to cover the rising costs of passport production, which have been significantly impacted by fluctuations in foreign exchange rates and global economic conditions. He noted that the last time passport fees were reviewed was over a decade ago, and since then, there has been a substantial increase in the cost of materials and production.
According to the revised fee structure, the cost of obtaining the following categories of Nigerian passports will be as follows:
32-page standard passport (valid for 5 years): ₦45,000 (previously ₦25,000)
64-page standard passport (valid for 5 years): ₦75,000 (previously ₦35,000)
64-page standard passport (valid for 10 years): ₦100,000 (previously ₦70,000)
E-passport for minors (under 16 years old): ₦25,000 (previously ₦15,000)
The Minister assured Nigerians that despite the increase, the government remains committed to ensuring that the passport application process is streamlined and efficient. “We understand the importance of passports to our citizens, both within and outside the country. The increase in fees is a necessary step to maintain the quality and availability of passports while ensuring that the service delivery is not compromised,” Hon. Tunji-Ojo stated.
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), under the leadership of the Comptroller General, Mr. Adepoju Carol Wura-Ola, has been directed to implement the new fee structure. In his remarks, Mr. Wura-Ola emphasized that the NIS is fully prepared to ensure a seamless transition to the new fees. He also reassured applicants that the Service has taken steps to improve the efficiency of passport issuance and reduce delays in processing.
“We are committed to serving Nigerians better. The new fees will allow us to maintain the high standards required for the issuance of passports, including the introduction of enhanced security features to combat forgery and identity theft,” Mr. Wura-Ola said.
He further explained that the increase in fees would also cover the cost of upgrading passport issuance facilities across the country, ensuring that they are equipped with the latest technology and are able to meet the growing demand for passports.
The announcement of the fee increase has elicited mixed reactions from the public. While some Nigerians have expressed concerns about the affordability of the new fees, others have acknowledged the need for the government to adjust prices in line with economic realities.
Speaking to journalists, a Lagos-based businessman, Mr. Adetola Adeyemi, noted, “While the increase is understandable given the current economic situation, I hope the government will ensure that the process of obtaining passports is made easier and faster. It’s important that Nigerians get value for the money they are paying.”
On the other hand, a student, Miss Ifeoma Nwosu, expressed concerns about the impact of the fee hike on young people. “As a student, the new fees are quite high. I hope there will be considerations for people like us who need passports but may not have a steady income,” she said.
In response to public concerns, Hon. Tunji-Ojo mentioned that the government is considering introducing a payment plan that would allow Nigerians to pay the passport fees in installments, especially for those in lower-income brackets. He also announced that the Ministry of Interior is working on a special discount scheme for students, retirees, and senior citizens.
“We are aware of the financial constraints faced by many Nigerians, and we are exploring options to make the process more affordable, particularly for vulnerable groups,” the Minister added.
As part of the government’s efforts to improve the passport issuance process, Hon. Tunji-Ojo revealed plans to open more passport offices across the country, particularly in underserved regions. The government also intends to introduce an online appointment system that will reduce the need for physical presence at passport offices, thus saving applicants time and travel costs.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that all Nigerians have access to travel documents without unnecessary delays. He also urged citizens to avoid patronizing unauthorized agents and middlemen, warning that the government will take strict action against any individual or group found exploiting citizens during the passport application process.
In concluding the press conference, Hon. Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is determined to improve the overall experience of obtaining a passport, making it more transparent, efficient, and secure. He encouraged citizens to cooperate with the NIS and adhere to the guidelines provided to ensure a smooth transition to the new fee structure.
