FG Blames Over-Reliance on Social Media for Slow Economic Growth

The Federal Government (FG) has raised concerns over Nigeria’s over-reliance on social media, linking it to the country’s slow economic growth. According to officials, excessive dependence on digital platforms for information, business, and even policymaking has created an environment where misinformation thrives, productivity drops, and economic development is affected.

Speaking at a recent stakeholders’ forum, FG representatives stressed that while social media has contributed positively to communication, business visibility, and innovation, it has also been misused in ways that negatively impact the economy. They noted that many young Nigerians spend more hours on unproductive online engagements rather than focusing on skill development, entrepreneurship, and value-driven activities.

The government further highlighted how the spread of fake news and misleading economic narratives on platforms like X, Facebook, and TikTok can distort investor confidence and fuel unnecessary panic. “Social media is powerful, but if not properly managed, it becomes a tool that slows down real progress,” one official stated.

Experts argue that while digital engagement is crucial in today’s world, there needs to be a balance. They recommend that Nigerians leverage social media more for innovation, learning, and expanding businesses rather than focusing on trends that add little value to personal growth or the nation’s economic stability.

The FG reiterated its commitment to creating policies that encourage digital literacy, regulated online activity, and productive internet use, ensuring that technology contributes meaningfully to economic recovery and long-term growth.
