FG Clarifies 5% Fuel Surcharge: ‘It’s Not a New Tax, Won’t Take Effect in 2026’

The Federal Government (FG) has debunked claims circulating online that Nigerians will face a new 5% fuel tax by 2026. In a statement, government officials clarified that the 5% fuel surcharge is not a fresh levy but an already existing framework tied to petroleum product distribution.

According to the FG, the surcharge does not translate into an additional burden on consumers, and it will not be implemented in 2026 as speculated in several reports. Instead, it is part of a long-standing operational guideline in the downstream petroleum sector.

The clarification comes amid rising public concern and backlash on social media, with many Nigerians expressing fears that the surcharge would further worsen fuel prices and deepen economic hardship.

Government representatives stressed that citizens should disregard false reports suggesting an impending hike in fuel costs. The Ministry of Finance and relevant agencies assured that no new taxes are being introduced on petroleum products, emphasizing that the administration remains committed to reducing inflationary pressure and protecting the public from unnecessary levies.

This clarification may ease growing fears but also highlights the sensitivity surrounding fuel policies in Nigeria, especially after the removal of fuel subsidy.
