Films Should Reflect the Mystery of African Culture — Niyi Akinmolayan
Renowned Nigerian filmmaker and creative director Niyi Akinmolayan has called on African filmmakers to focus more on portraying the depth, mystery, and richness of African culture through their storytelling. The director, known for his visionary works such as The Wedding Party 2, The Man for the Job, and The House of Secrets, stated that Africa’s cultural essence holds untapped storytelling potential that deserves global attention.
Speaking during a recent creative industry forum, Akinmolayan highlighted how modern African cinema often leans toward Western-inspired narratives, leaving behind the continent’s rich heritage and spiritual depth. According to him, African films should mirror the mystique, spirituality, and moral lessons embedded in African culture, which distinguish the continent’s identity from the rest of the world.
“African stories have layers of mystery, history, and beauty that are deeply rooted in our traditions. Our films should explore that mystery instead of constantly trying to imitate Western culture,” Akinmolayan said.
The filmmaker also stressed that cultural representation is not only vital for preserving African identity but also for inspiring a new generation of storytellers to see the value in local narratives. He noted that Africa’s folklore, ancestral wisdom, and diverse traditions could serve as a creative goldmine for filmmakers across the continent.
Akinmolayan, who is also the founder of Anthill Studios, a leading Nigerian film production company, continues to champion innovation and authenticity in Nollywood. His call resonates with ongoing conversations about promoting African originality in cinema and positioning the industry as a global force grounded in its roots.
