Finance Minister, NLNG Unveil Gas Expansion Plans, Targeting 10 Billion SCF Production by 2030
Nigeria is stepping up efforts to solidify its place in the global energy market as the Minister of Finance and the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited announced renewed commitments to expand the country’s gas sector. Central to the discussions is the ambitious plan to achieve 10 billion standard cubic feet (SCF) of gas production by 2030.
The Finance Minister emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s long-term energy transition strategy, which seeks to reduce dependence on crude oil revenues and harness Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves for sustainable economic growth. According to him, achieving this target will enhance the country’s foreign exchange earnings, attract global investments, and provide reliable energy for local industries.
The NLNG management noted that the expansion drive involves infrastructure upgrades, new projects, and stronger collaborations with both local and international partners. With Nigeria ranked among the top holders of natural gas reserves globally, stakeholders believe that the ambitious 2030 target could significantly boost the country’s role in the global gas supply chain.
Energy experts also predict that the move could create thousands of jobs, lower energy costs, and support the government’s drive toward industrialization. In addition, the gas expansion plan is expected to help Nigeria meet its climate change commitments by providing a cleaner alternative to other fossil fuels.
The Finance Minister reassured investors that policies are being fine-tuned to ensure a conducive environment for gas exploration, processing, and distribution, making the 2030 production milestone achievable.
