Former President Buhari’s Remains Laid to Rest in Daura

Nigeria has bid farewell to one of its most influential political figures as the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari were laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. The solemn burial ceremony was attended by family members, political leaders, dignitaries, and citizens who gathered to pay their last respects.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, passed away after a brief illness, according to a statement from the family. His death marks the end of a political era defined by both fervent support and intense criticism.

His remains were interred at the Daura Central Cemetery after the Janazah prayer at the Emir of Daura’s palace mosque. The prayer session was led by top Islamic clerics, in accordance with Islamic rites. Emotional scenes played out as mourners paid tribute to the late leader, highlighting his dedication to public service, anti-corruption stance, and controversial yet impactful economic and security policies.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led the federal delegation to the burial and offered condolences to the family and people of Katsina State. In his statement, Tinubu described Buhari as “a man of discipline and conviction who remained committed to the unity and progress of Nigeria.”

Buhari’s legacy remains complex — hailed by some for his anti-corruption drive and infrastructural development, while others criticized his administration for rising insecurity, economic downturn, and perceived human rights violations. Regardless, his influence on Nigeria’s political landscape is undeniable.

As the nation reflects on his life and leadership, tributes continue to pour in from across the globe, with many recognizing Buhari’s role in shaping Nigeria’s modern democracy. His burial concludes a chapter in the country’s history, leaving behind a legacy that will be debated for years to come.
