Former West Ham United man has ‘head turned’ ahead of Newcastle United loan decision
When Harrison Ashby secured a loan out from Newcastle United, he acknowledged that Queens Park Rangers’ interest had “turned his head.”
The 22-year-old right-back, who paid £3 million to join Newcastle from West Ham United in January 2023, has only played in friendly matches. Ashby played in the Championship last season while on loan at Swansea City, but injuries plagued him.
Newcastle made the full-back available during the summer transfer window, and on deadline day, QPR managed to finalize a deal. Ashby is one of the 14 senior players that Newcastle has stated will be leaving during the summer transfer window.
Additionally, Ashby expressed his excitement for the upcoming season on the QPR website, saying, “There is only one place that I wanted to come.”
“My mind immediately turned after speaking with the persons I spoke to and our conversations.”
“Playing the type of football you want to play is a significant part of going on loan. While you’re out on loan, you want to get better and support the team.
“I can definitely improve my game with this setup.”
Before moving to Newcastle, Ashby made seven professional appearances for West Ham. He has yet to make his competitive debut for The Magpies, but he has already made 16 appearances for Swansea last season, scoring once, and playing for the Under-21s.

“Coming here is another experience I can add to the list of experiences that have really helped me in my career,” Ashby continued.
“After coming here and taking a look around, my entire focus is on playing for QPR and getting things going.”
Desireaway Isaac Hayden, a midfielder for Newcastle, reacted to Ashby’s departure on social media by writing, “Good luck bro.” Excellent club with wonderful members.
Hayden was on loan at QPR for the entire previous season, but his second stint there was cut short during the summer transfer window. Even after the domestic transfer window closed, he still has a contract with Newcastle that expires in 2026, and he is still interested in leaving the team.
