Ibadan Airport Upgrade Central To Oyo’s Economic Expansion Agenda – Makinde
The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the economic expansion of the state by prioritizing the upgrade of Ibadan Airport. The governor emphasized that the airport’s modernization is pivotal to Oyo’s comprehensive development plan, which aims to attract investment, boost tourism, and enhance regional connectivity.
Ibadan Airport, located in Alakia, is currently undergoing significant upgrades to transform it into a major regional aviation hub. Governor Makinde highlighted the strategic importance of this project during a recent press briefing. “The upgrade of Ibadan Airport is not just about improving infrastructure; it is central to our economic expansion agenda. By enhancing the airport’s facilities, we are positioning Oyo State as a key player in regional and international trade, tourism, and investment.”
The upgrade includes the extension of the runway, modernization of the terminal building, and installation of advanced navigational aids. These improvements aim to increase the airport’s capacity to handle larger aircraft and more passengers, ensuring it meets international standards.
Governor Makinde outlined the numerous economic benefits that the upgraded airport is expected to bring. “A modernized Ibadan Airport will serve as a catalyst for economic growth in Oyo State. It will facilitate the movement of goods and people, attract foreign and local investors, and create thousands of jobs. Additionally, it will support the agricultural sector by providing a quicker and more efficient means of transporting produce to markets both within Nigeria and abroad.”
The governor also noted that the improved airport infrastructure will enhance Oyo’s appeal as a tourist destination. “Tourism is a significant part of our economic strategy. With an upgraded airport, we can attract more tourists to our historical sites, cultural festivals, and natural attractions. This will generate revenue and create employment opportunities for our people.”
The Oyo State government has secured partnerships with various stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of the airport upgrade. This includes collaboration with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), private sector investors, and international aviation organizations.
Governor Makinde expressed gratitude to these partners for their support and investment. “We are grateful for the collaboration with FAAN and our private sector partners who share our vision for a thriving Oyo State. Their support is crucial in bringing this project to fruition.”
The funding for the airport upgrade comes from a combination of state government resources, federal allocations, and private investments. This multi-faceted funding approach ensures that the project is adequately financed and completed on schedule.
The governor emphasized that the airport upgrade will have a far-reaching impact on the development of not only Ibadan but the entire Oyo State and neighboring regions. “The enhanced airport will serve as a gateway to the southwestern region of Nigeria, promoting regional integration and economic cooperation. It will also reduce the pressure on Lagos airports, providing a viable alternative for air travelers and businesses.”
The project is part of a broader infrastructure development agenda that includes the expansion of road networks, improvement of public transportation systems, and investment in technology and education.
Governor Makinde assured residents that the state government is committed to minimizing disruptions during the construction phase and ensuring that the local community benefits from the project. “We are engaging with community leaders and stakeholders to address any concerns and ensure that the airport upgrade benefits everyone. This project is for the people of Oyo State, and their support and cooperation are essential.”
The airport upgrade is progressing according to the planned timeline, with significant milestones already achieved. The runway extension is near completion, and work on the terminal building and other facilities is advancing rapidly. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Governor Makinde concluded by reiterating his administration’s commitment to the economic development of Oyo State. “The upgrade of Ibadan Airport is a testament to our dedication to transforming Oyo State into an economic powerhouse. We are determined to create a prosperous future for our people, and this project is a critical step in that direction.”
