Kaffy – I Set Standards for Nigerian Dancers
Renowned Nigerian choreographer and dance queen Kaffy has boldly declared that she set the standards for professional dancers in Nigeria, a claim that has sparked conversations across the entertainment industry. In a recent interview, the award-winning performer opened up about her journey, achievements, and the impact she has made in redefining dance as a respected and profitable career path in Nigeria.
Kaffy, whose real name is Kafayat Shafau-Ameh, rose to national and international fame after breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest dance party in 2006. Since then, she has become a household name, mentoring hundreds of dancers, headlining global stages, and advocating for better recognition and welfare for creatives in the dance community.
“I didn’t just dance, I built a structure,” she said. “I set standards for Nigerian dancers—from branding and work ethic to how we are perceived in the entertainment world. Dance was once seen as a hobby, but today it’s a profession people can proudly pursue, and I’m proud to be a part of that change.”
Kaffy spoke about the struggles she faced early in her career, including a lack of industry respect and the absence of financial rewards. Through persistence and strategic collaborations with top artists like P-Square, D’banj, Tiwa Savage, and more, she carved out a path for dancers to earn recognition and decent income.
Today, many dancers in Nigeria are securing brand endorsements, global tours, and creating their own platforms—developments Kaffy believes are rooted in the legacy she helped build. “The dance industry is thriving now because people like me refused to settle for less. I turned my passion into a profession, and I want others to do the same—with structure, vision, and value.”
As a mentor, entrepreneur, and wellness advocate, Kaffy continues to push boundaries. Her dance academy and wellness initiatives are grooming the next generation of Nigerian dancers to think beyond choreography—to brand themselves, understand contracts, and build lasting careers.
With her latest statement, Kaffy is not just celebrating her legacy but also reaffirming her position as a pioneer. For many in the industry, there’s no doubt—Kaffy didn’t just join the movement; she created it.
