Lagos Drags National Assembly to Court Over Central Gaming Bill

The Lagos State Government has taken a bold step by dragging the National Assembly to court over the controversial central gaming bill currently under consideration.

According to reports, the state government argues that the proposed bill seeks to strip states of their constitutional powers to regulate and control gaming and betting activities within their territories. Lagos, which generates significant revenue from gaming regulation, insists that the central bill undermines its authority and autonomy.

Legal experts say this move could set the stage for a landmark constitutional battle, as the case touches on the broader issue of federalism and states’ rights in Nigeria. Lagos maintains that only states have the power to legislate on matters relating to gaming, lotteries, and betting, adding that centralizing it at the federal level would not only weaken state control but also create regulatory conflict.

The state government also expressed concern that such a law could stifle innovation, reduce internally generated revenue (IGR), and negatively impact local operators.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly has defended its stance, saying the bill aims to create a uniform framework for gaming regulation across Nigeria.

The matter is now before the court, and stakeholders in the gaming industry are closely watching the outcome, as it could redefine how betting and gaming are governed in the country.
