Lagos Impounds 155 Vehicles, Vows Continuous Crackdown on Illegal Garages and Roadside Shanties
The Lagos State Government has intensified its enforcement drive to restore sanity on roads and public spaces, with the recent impoundment of 155 vehicles and removal of several illegal garages and roadside shanties across key parts of the state.
In a statement issued by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and the Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences Unit, the government said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to ensure free flow of traffic, enhance security, and promote environmental cleanliness.
According to the statement, the crackdown targeted areas notorious for traffic congestion and illegal parking, including Oshodi, Apapa, Surulere, Berger, and Mile 2. The government emphasized that the exercise was not a one-off action but part of a continuous citywide operation to restore order on Lagos roads.
“Our mission is to reclaim public spaces from indiscriminate parkers, roadside traders, and illegal garage operators who disrupt traffic and deface the city,” the agency’s spokesperson said.
The government also dismantled makeshift structures and shanties used as illegal markets and residential shelters, warning that such structures pose environmental and security risks.
Lagos residents have been urged to comply with traffic and environmental regulations to avoid sanctions. The administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a cleaner, safer, and more organized Lagos, aligning with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda on traffic management and environmental sustainability.
Stakeholders praised the move, saying it would improve mobility, curb criminal hideouts, and enhance the overall beauty of the city.
