Lawyer Demands ₦1 Billion Compensation from IGP Over ‘Wanted’ Declaration
A Nigerian lawyer has filed a ₦1 billion lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for allegedly declaring him wanted without following due process.
The legal practitioner, whose identity has been revealed in court filings, argued that the police acted unlawfully by circulating his image and declaring him wanted without a valid court order or proper investigation. According to him, the move has subjected him to public ridicule, reputational damage, and emotional distress.
In the suit, filed at the Federal High Court, the lawyer is seeking:
-
A ₦1 billion compensation for damages suffered.
-
A public retraction of the “wanted” declaration.
-
A perpetual injunction restraining the police from further harassment.
His counsel emphasized that the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to dignity and fair hearing, and no individual should be declared wanted outside the provisions of the law.
This case has stirred reactions within the legal community, with many describing it as a crucial test of accountability within Nigeria’s security and justice system.
As the matter heads to court, Nigerians are watching to see how the judiciary will rule on the balance between police powers and the fundamental rights of citizens.
