MAN Warns Lagos Plastic Ban Could Trigger Job Losses, Economic Disruption Ahead of July 1 Enforcement

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has raised alarm over the impending plastic ban in Lagos State, warning that the policy, set for enforcement on July 1, could lead to massive job losses and significant economic disruption across multiple sectors.

In an official statement, MAN expressed concern that the Lagos State Government’s move to phase out single-use plastics and certain polythene materials, while environmentally motivated, could destabilize industries reliant on plastic packaging, particularly manufacturing, food and beverage, and logistics.

According to the association, thousands of workers in plastic production and allied industries are at risk of losing their jobs if alternative solutions are not provided before the ban takes effect. “This blanket ban without adequate transition support or a robust recycling framework could cripple small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and displace thousands of Nigerians from their means of livelihood,” the statement read.

While MAN acknowledged the need to tackle plastic pollution, it urged the state government to adopt a phased and consultative approach, involving key stakeholders and providing incentives for a gradual switch to eco-friendly alternatives.

With the July 1 enforcement deadline fast approaching, industry experts are calling for urgent dialogue to balance environmental protection with economic sustainability. The Lagos plastic ban, if not properly implemented, could become a flashpoint for both economic strain and social unrest, particularly in an already pressured economy.

As it stands, MAN’s warning is a crucial reminder that bold environmental policies must also consider the socio-economic implications for long-term success.
