MEET DJ CHAMP CREDEET HQ MOST TALENTED FEMALE DJ
We had a chat with one of the Nigeria promising DJ popularly known as DJ CHAMP. The young talented Dj is here to stay, kindly enjoy her interview.
CAN WE MEET YOU?
I’m Catherine Ebiwari Fiyebo, I’m a DJ as well as an audio broadcast producer, my stage name is Champ, DJ Champ To The World.
As an intern, worked as a broadcast producer with CMA (Soundcity/Urban and Correct Radio)
I have a degree in Mass Communication from Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State.
THE JOURNEY SO FAR AND HOW IT STARTED?
The journey has been wow! Fun, stressing, interesting and worth the push. I’ve been a DJ for three (3) years and some months now. Started from my high school days though, those that knew then or still do, can attest to this fact.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BE A DJ?
My love for the game is real, I said from my high school days yeah, then I never knew women was into it, I just love the fact that different music from different artists can be merged and it takes a DJ to do that
HOW DID YOUR FAMILY ACCEPT YOU PICKING DJ AFTER SCHOOL?
I was still in school when I picked it, at first, I didn’t mention it to nobody, twas just friends in school, this was my second year, got home during holidays, opened up to my elder bro who in turn hooked me up to one of his friends that is a DJ and boom! It started. My mom up till date isn’t as cool with it, she complains at every outing I’m going for but I’ve got supportive siblings
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I was 19 when I played at my nephew’s birthday using my phone and I hosted it as well. All my songs were on my phone and at that time, my sis walked up to me and said “you really love this thing o” and I replied yes, the next thing she said was, “no worry if you enter this fashion designing line, you go like am pass (lolz).” Guess what? That was the beginning. I downloaded this virtual DJ app on my phone, didn’t even understand it a bit, played around it before uni days and before my brother introduced me to his friend.
For me, I would say my love for music as well as sound set-up, inspires me. DJing opened my eyes to many other things, I do sound set-up now quite well and I love it, if I don’t live it, I won’t be inspired to push into it. I always want to learn whenever there’s an opportunity and yeah, my passion for this job has given me the strength.
WHO ARE YOUR MENTORS
DJ Irene a female American electronic music DJ and producer. I enjoy watching her set and she has to be my mentor cos I learn from her as well.
Another person would be DJ Black Coffee, a South African DJ and producer, a colleague introduced me to him online just recently and it’s not been regret.
Coming to the Nigerian scene, DJ Neptune has to be one of my mentors, I worked with him twice while I was interning at Soundcity/Urban Radio Lagos, I learnt from him and it was full of life.
DJ Switch, she’s creative, timely and she understands the craft so well and can teach it as well. Watch her videos online and hope to be as good as she is someday.
DJ Wysei, top notch as well, she’s got the fire and can impact as well.
DJ Moonlait, love her passion for the game, met her not quite long and it’s been good all the way. She’s homely and creative with the craft.
DJ Emmyx, I learnt from him and it was fun working with him, learnt lotta stuff from him and hope to be as good.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING MOMENT AS A DJ?
Wow! The job itself is challenging cos I have to make sure I put in my all when on a set. When playing at gigs, I learn as well, it may be from the crowd or instinct.
For the while I’ve been a DJ, knowing what and how to play for a particular audience as well as trying to prove you know what you’re doing and good at it has been challenging. But consistent practice has kept me on.
