My Job Is To Save Penalty – Onana
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana played down his heroics after their 1-0 Champions League win against FC Copenhagen.
Harry Maguire proved the night’s matchwinner, with Onana also denying Jordan Larsson from the penalty spot in injury-time.
Onana said: “I’m just doing my job, the most important thing is to win against a tough team.
“I am happy for the victory, we did a good game and a big goal from Harry [Maguire].
“We are Manchester United. We are a big club, big players. It’s just a matter of time, now we have to continue like this. I have no doubt we will make it.”
He added: “I didn’t start the way I started at other clubs, where I started really well. I haven’t started how I wanted to here, but that’s life. I’m happy now. This is football. You cannot always be on top. Being a player at United is not easy. You need a big personality. You need to be strong. That’s what I am doing.”
Onana is a sweeper-keeper who has strong distribution skills. He regularly comes out of his box to help build-up play and is known for his confidence on the ball and range of passing.
In Cameroon’s opening 2022 World Cup game against Switzerland, Onana had more touches of the ball outside of the box than any goalkeeper in a World Cup match since records began in 1966. He was described as resembling a “holding midfielder at times” in UEFA’s Technical Observers’ report on the 2022–23 Champions League.
In July 2023, he was described as “a modern keeper… with the technique of an outfield player”.
