NANS Defends Matawalle, Labels Banditry Allegations Political Blackmail
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has come out strongly in defence of former Zamfara State governor and current Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, dismissing allegations linking him to banditry as unfounded and politically motivated.
In a statement released by its leadership, NANS described the claims as a deliberate attempt to smear Matawalle’s image and distract from ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity in the country. The student body stressed that such allegations, when not backed by credible evidence, only serve to heighten political tension and undermine national unity.
NANS further noted that Matawalle’s role within the defence sector requires collective support rather than public attacks driven by partisan interests. According to the association, accusations of this magnitude should be addressed through proper investigative and judicial channels, not media trials or political propaganda.
Calling on Nigerians to remain discerning, NANS urged political actors to prioritise constructive dialogue and national development over what it termed “destructive narratives.” The association reaffirmed its commitment to standing against misinformation and supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace and security across the country.
