Nigeria Can’t Be a One-Party State — Gov. Sule

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has stated firmly that Nigeria cannot operate as a one-party state, emphasizing the importance of political plurality for the country’s democracy to thrive. Speaking during an interview with journalists, Governor Sule stressed that the strength of any democratic nation lies in the presence of multiple political voices and opposition parties that serve as checks and balances.

He acknowledged the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in certain areas but maintained that a vibrant opposition is essential to keep the ruling party accountable and responsive to the needs of the people. According to him, “A strong opposition makes a strong democracy. We need people to challenge us, to tell us when we are wrong, and to offer better ideas.”

Governor Sule also called on political actors to focus more on governance and delivering on campaign promises, rather than undermining rival parties. He noted that democracy is best practiced when there is freedom of association and when citizens can choose from a range of viable political options.

His remarks come amid growing concerns about political tensions and the perceived weakening of opposition voices in some parts of the country. Governor Sule’s position has been praised by advocates of democratic governance who view his comments as a call for a more inclusive and participatory political environment.
