Nigeria Drifting Toward a One-Party State — Adebayo Raises Alarm
Prominent human rights lawyer and political advocate, Adebayo, has expressed deep concern that Nigeria is slowly drifting toward a one-party state. According to him, recent political manoeuvres and systemic imbalances show a worrying pattern that threatens the country’s democratic structure. He stressed that Nigeria’s political landscape is becoming increasingly dominated by a single ruling force, leaving opposition parties weakened and citizens without balanced representation.
Adebayo noted that the rise of unchecked political influence, institutional compromise, and suppression of dissenting voices are indicators of a shrinking democratic space. He urged Nigerians to pay attention to the gradual erosion of multiparty participation, warning that democracy is at risk when political competition no longer exists. He insisted that for Nigeria to thrive, the rule of law, fair elections, and transparent governance must be protected at all costs.
He further called on civil society organisations, youth groups, and stakeholders across the country to stand firm in defence of democratic freedoms. Adebayo emphasised that the survival of Nigeria’s democracy depends on active citizen engagement and a commitment to preventing the nation from sliding into authoritarian dominance disguised as governance.
