Nigeria: Group Expresses Concern Over Senate’s Delay in Confirming Electricity Commission Chair

A leading civil society group has expressed deep concern over the Nigerian Senate’s delay in confirming the Chairperson of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), warning that the continued postponement could negatively impact the country’s power sector reforms and regulatory efficiency.

The group emphasized that the delay in confirming the nominee, who was submitted by the Presidency months ago, risks creating a leadership vacuum within the commission at a time when Nigeria is grappling with critical electricity challenges. They argued that the lack of a substantive chair has hindered policy implementation, investment decisions, and consumer protection — all of which are vital to improving Nigeria’s electricity supply and pricing framework.

According to the statement, the confirmation process has taken unusually long despite the urgent need for leadership stability within the commission. The group urged the Senate Committee on Power to prioritize the screening and confirmation to restore investor confidence in Nigeria’s electricity market. They further stressed that a functioning and well-led regulatory body is essential to achieving the government’s Energy Transition Plan (ETP) and ensuring reliable electricity for both industrial and domestic use.

Stakeholders in the power sector have also echoed these sentiments, noting that regulatory delays could discourage foreign investors and stall progress on ongoing projects, including renewable energy initiatives. The group called on lawmakers to act swiftly in the national interest and uphold their constitutional duty to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity governance framework.
