Nigerians’ Health at Risk as Toxic Chemicals Contaminate Food Supply
Health experts and environmental advocates have sounded the alarm over the increasing contamination of Nigeria’s food supply with toxic chemicals. From pesticides used on crops to preservatives in processed foods, the nation’s food safety system faces growing scrutiny amid reports linking chemical exposure to chronic health conditions.
According to recent studies, many locally produced and imported food items contain high levels of hazardous substances, including heavy metals, pesticide residues, and artificial additives. Experts warn that long-term consumption of these contaminated foods could lead to serious health complications such as cancer, liver and kidney failure, hormonal imbalance, and developmental issues in children.
Dr. Ifeoma Adeoye, a public health nutritionist, noted that weak regulatory enforcement and poor agricultural practices are key contributors to the rising contamination. She urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other agencies to strengthen monitoring and tighten import control mechanisms to protect consumers.
Environmental groups have also raised concerns about the use of unapproved pesticides and chemical fertilizers by farmers, which not only threaten human health but also pollute soil and water sources. They are calling on the government to promote organic farming and enhance public awareness on food safety and proper chemical handling.
With Nigeria’s growing dependence on both local and imported food products, experts emphasize that ensuring a safe and toxin-free food chain is critical to public health and sustainable development. Urgent reforms, transparency in food production, and consumer education are seen as essential steps to safeguard Nigerians from the invisible dangers in their daily meals.
