Nigerians No Longer Value Meaningful Songs – African China Laments
Veteran singer and socially conscious artist African China has expressed deep concern over the current state of the Nigerian music industry, stating that Nigerians no longer value meaningful songs. The “Mr. President” crooner, known for his powerful messages on societal issues, lamented the shift from substance to style in today’s music scene.
In a recent interview, African China noted that while the industry has grown in terms of global reach and sound quality, the lyrical depth and conscious storytelling that once defined Nigerian music have taken a backseat. “Back then, we used music to speak truth to power, to inspire change and educate the people. But now, it’s more about trends and less about message,” he said.
He pointed out that many of today’s chart-topping songs focus on superficial themes, neglecting the realities on the ground and the voices of the masses. According to him, artists who attempt to deliver songs with meaningful lyrics often struggle to gain traction in a market that now prioritizes club bangers and viral content.
African China’s remarks have sparked a fresh wave of online discourse, with fans and fellow artists divided over the balance between entertainment and advocacy in music. While some argue that times have changed, others agree that the industry needs to make room once again for music that not only entertains but enlightens.
As one of the respected voices in Nigerian music, African China continues to stand firm in his belief that music should reflect the people’s struggles, hopes, and truth — a message he has carried throughout his career.
