Nigerians Should Expect Community, State Police Soon — Tinubu Tells CAN
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the long-awaited implementation of community and state policing is drawing closer, as part of his administration’s broader efforts to address the country’s persistent security challenges.
The President gave the assurance during a meeting with leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), where discussions focused on national unity, security, and governance reforms aimed at strengthening peace across the country.
Tinubu acknowledged that insecurity remains a major concern for citizens, stressing that his government understands the urgency of tackling crime, terrorism, and communal violence. According to him, decentralising policing through community and state police structures will allow for faster response, improved intelligence gathering, and better understanding of local security dynamics.
He noted that Nigeria’s security architecture must evolve to reflect modern realities, adding that empowering states and communities to participate actively in policing would enhance accountability and public trust.
The President also reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with religious leaders, traditional rulers, and community stakeholders to promote peace and prevent conflicts. He urged faith leaders to continue preaching unity, tolerance, and cooperation among Nigerians, regardless of ethnic or religious differences.
CAN leaders, in response, welcomed the President’s assurance and called for sustained dialogue and transparency as the proposed reforms move closer to implementation. They emphasized the importance of inclusive governance and the protection of lives and property across all regions.
Tinubu assured Nigerians that consultations with relevant stakeholders are ongoing and that legal and institutional frameworks are being strengthened to ensure the successful rollout of community and state policing when fully implemented.
