Nigeria’s Islamic Leaders Join National Dialogue on Biotechnology and Food Security

Prominent Islamic leaders across Nigeria have thrown their weight behind a national dialogue aimed at exploring the role of biotechnology in advancing food security. The engagement, which brought together scientists, policy makers, scholars, and faith-based leaders, marked a significant step toward bridging the gap between scientific innovation and religious understanding in agricultural development.

Held in Abuja, the dialogue focused on dispelling misconceptions about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and fostering a collaborative approach to addressing Nigeria’s ongoing food insecurity challenges. Islamic scholars from various sects and regions participated, emphasizing that science and faith can coexist when human welfare is at the center of progress.

Speaking at the event, representatives from the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) explained the safety and benefits of biotechnology in modern farming. They highlighted how improved crop yields, pest resistance, and climate adaptation made possible through biotech solutions could help Nigeria achieve sustainable food production.

Islamic leaders, in turn, stressed the importance of aligning scientific practices with ethical and religious values. They agreed that with proper education and regulatory oversight, biotechnology could be accepted within the framework of Islamic principles, especially if it aims to reduce hunger and poverty.

This initiative comes at a crucial time as Nigeria battles rising food prices, low agricultural productivity, and climate-induced disruptions. By including religious voices in the national conversation on food security and technology, stakeholders hope to foster broader acceptance and accelerate the deployment of biotech innovations in farming communities across the country.

The collaboration between religious leaders and scientists could be a game-changer in reshaping public perception of biotechnology in Nigeria and beyond.
